The Newborn Experience
Welcome! Here you will find all the info you need to prepare for your newborn session. My hope is that you will be as prepared as you can for your session. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to shoot me an email. I am SO excited to capture you and your loved ones!
Day Of The Session: When I arrive, I will walk around your home and scout out the best lit areas for family and sibling shots. I often use the couch, master bed, and nursery for photos. Please don't feel like you have to clean the house before I arrive. We can easily clean up an area that we want to use for photos.
Your Baby: Your newborn is perfect just the way he or she is. I don't try and make babies sleep or place them in unnatural poses. I suggest you have your newborn in a simple onesie that is form fitting with no graphics or words. Sometimes this means you will need a preemie or newborn sized onesie. Also, please gather a few favorite swaddle blankets for baby to be wrapped in. I recommend feeding the baby about fifteen minutes prior to my arrival. Newborn sessions can take some time, that is okay. We let the baby guide the session. What is important is that we capture this beautiful time in your life.
Siblings: I understand how big this change is for the siblings in the house. It is best to prepare the sibling for the session by telling him or her that a friend is coming to visit and take some photos of your family. It is always best not to surprise them. I usually try and get sibling and family photos right at the start because the sibling may lose interest in me quickly. I have no major expectations for the siblings and will never force them into doing anything they aren't comfortable with. If the siblings are not being cooperative, please do not worry. Try not to stress out about your child's behavior during the session. I know it can be difficult and frustrating if they are misbehaving. I promise your photographs will be 10x better if you can keep your cool, smile, and go with the flow :)
Mom & Dad: You are going to be thrilled and exhausted. You will likely be experiencing the highest highs and perhaps some of the lowest lows. Having a new baby is hard and wonderful all at the same time. My job is not to make this time in your life look perfect, my job is to show you just how beautiful it is. I want you to be relaxed and at ease when I am photographing your family. You don't need to be anything but yourself.
Wardrobe: Your wardrobe should reflect who you are. Here are my quick tips for newborn sessions outfits:
I recommend neutral colors and comfort. You just had a baby, you don’t need to be gettin’ all fancy for me. My favorite outfit for mom? Leggings and over-sized sweater. Comfortable and classic. Remember, we are photographing you in your home.
For the newborn, I always suggest a simple, form-fitting onesie. Sometimes this means you will need a premie or newborn size.
Stay away from bright, neon colors because those can reflect harsh on the babies' skin.
For the rest of the family? Add interest with simple patterns and textures.
Remember, don’t put everyone in black or you’ll look like one big blob sitting on the couch!
Here are a few newborn family outfits I put together that would look amazing in photographs. As always, I am happy to consult you directly on wardrobe if you are interested! Just let me know :)
Post-Session Expectations: Within 3 weeks of your session, a private, password protected gallery will be available to view your images. Your gallery will be available for viewing and downloading for 4 weeks. You may share your gallery link with family and friends. Please back-up your files.
